3-Day Workshop

Different Brains, Different Learners

The Science of Successfully Reaching the Underperforming, Misbehaving and Hard to Reach Student

Curriculum and Course Outline

This is the course for pre-K through secondary school educators that reveals exactly why students struggle with learning and specifically what you can do about it. You will learn to reach more students, more often, with greater predictability through differentiated, brain-based instruction.

DAY ONE

Introduction to Differentiated Brains— Learn through case studies about the variability in learners, and how and why some brains work differently.

How the Brain Changes— Find out what drives change in the human brain and how teachers and other paraprofessionals can influence these factors. If you don't know how the brain changes, you can't know the most effective way to reach your students. This course is the one that gives you specific, differentiated strategies for reaching the hard to reach.

Learned Helplessness— Discover why some students don't participate, don't appear to care, and sometimes refuse to try. Learn specific, practical strategies you can use immediately to assist these students. Some students abusing drugs falsely appear to have this condition. Learn the signs and key strategies for dealing with drug abuse.

Learning Delays and Delayed Development— This session covers many disorders including Developmental Disorder (DDO), Mental Retardation (MR), Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and Nonverbal Learning Disorder (NVLD). Learn what heals the brain and how you can help these students succeed.

DAY TWO

Dyslexia— This is the primary type of reading disorder. Find out who has it, what dyslexia really is, the critical signs and symptoms and how to successfully treat dyslexia.

Oppositional Disorder (ODD)— Find out why ODD occurs and how to deal with oppositional students. Gain the specific, practical strategies you can use immediately.

Autistic Spectrum Disorders— Learn what autism is, how to recognize it and what you can do to manage it. Find out the latest insights and gain specific, practical strategies you can use in your class tomorrow.

Attention Deficit AD/HD— Learn the myths about AD/HD. Discover the best ways to deal with this disorder. Discover how prevalent AD/HD really is. Find out specific, practical strategies you can use immediately.

DAY THREE

Anxiety and Stress Disorders— There are almost 10 million students in America (20%), who are either diagnosed with a stress disorder or suffering from some type of anxiety or stress problem. Students with these disorders have great difficulty coping in the classroom. Discover what you can do to help these students thrive.

Depression— This affects as many as 35% (by age 19, lifetime prevalence) of all girls and up to 10% of all school age boys. Learn to recognize the hidden symptoms of depression and identify strategies to manage it.

Central Auditory Processing Deficits (CAPD)— CAPD is an enormous problem for many students. Learn the symptoms and strategies for handling CAPD.

Conduct Disorder— Conduct Disorder is one of the most difficult disorders to manage in the classroom. You will develop strategies to cope with this disorder in this exceptional workshop.

Did You Know?

  • According to top neuroscientist, 9-15 million school age children suffer from a disorder that few teachers know about or are able to recognize. Find out what disorder this is on day three of training.

  • 1 in 166 children have an autistic spectrum disorder. Do you know the signals, risks, opportunities, dangers and treatments.

  • If you add up the numbers of children who suffer from behavioral and academic disorders (and subtract the overlapping ones), these disorders affect over 40% of the school age population. That's right; four in ten have diagnosable conditions!

Different Brains, Different Learners is a "Crash Course" in the Latest Brain-Based Differentiation Strategies

Can all children learn? Can all learners succeed?

Yes, if and ONLY if, those around them have the awareness, resources, intention and commitment to help. Every time I hear school districts' slogans say, "All children can and will learn (and succeed)," I wonder if they're up to date on the latest brain research. Often, the reason that a child can't learn is because of brain insults, poor nutrition, learning disorders or chronic distress. Unless you can identify the symptoms, size up the nature of the problem and successfully treat these learners, you will have serious problems. This is the single most significant issue in education today: How to identify and help learners with different brains.

YOUR REGISTRATION GIVES YOU:

Read This Real World Story...

Two teachers see and hear the same restless student. To one teacher, the behaviors are a discipline problem. It's one more daily example from a long line of seemingly disrespectful actions and comments. "The student is a chronic offender and needs to be disciplined with swift punishment," she says.

But to another teacher, a far different profile emerges. She sees and hears a cry for help. She knows the symptoms of reading problems, combined with exposure to trauma. To her, the solutions are clear and the possibilities for miracles with this student are high.

The second teacher begins with a targeted reading recovery program. Then she adjusts the classroom activities to help lower the possibility of threat reactivation and increase attachment levels with this student. "This student deserves a chance to learn," she says.

Ten years later, the first student becomes a repeat offender with a long list of broken relationships, lost jobs and violent felonies.

But the same student, with the second teacher, has a different outcome. He has learned to read, and graduates not just from high school, but also from college. He has become a deputy probation counselor and works with children who have had problems at home, just like his teacher did.

What was the real difference between these two children? The key was a savvy teacher who knew how to help this child cope and learn. Would you know how to spot the symptoms? Would you know the strategies to use? Take this course and be sure!

Take this powerful 3-day course and you'll be able to make better choices and a real difference in the lives of troubled students. The brain changes everyday. You can choose to be a part of change for the better or the worse. Find out how to make a difference in this strategy-packed life-changing session. Now is the time to register!
